Come to this most important meeting of the new year to fight against Light Rail in Pinellas!

   Board of Directors meeting

          PSTA Headquarters

          3201 Scherer Drive

         St Petersburg, Florida

         January 23  9am    (MAP)

At this upcoming meeting, we have learned that CEO Brad Miller of PSTA will be asking the PSTA Board of Directors to vote "thumbs up" to make a formal request to the Pinellas County Commission to place the 1% sales tax referendum on the ballot for 2014 for light rail. Sound the Bell!

This is the time to show up and voice your opposition to an additional 1% sales tax in Pinellas to fund a light rail from Clearwater to St Petersburg. If passed by the low information voters, we will have an 8% sales tax, the highest in the state, to fund a light rail system that a projected 3% will ride at your expense.

All public transportation is subsidized to the tune of 75-80%. Yes, the bus system you see around the county is subsidized 78% ( by us thru our property tax) and is operating on reserves currently, and, projected to run out of reserves 2015, just 2 years from now. So the answer is to buy a train! Ad Valorem tax collects $30 million, 1% would collect $130 million! They need the tax referendum passed by the public to get this money!

The current bus system in Pinellas operates on $30 million from our property taxes along with federal grants. They are going broke due to mismanagement and guess what....Overspending! Several salaries in the $150 K per year range!

Their solution is to get us all hyped about the great move to install a light rail system! Wake up to the facts of light rail, the over estimate of the usage and under estimate of the initial construction costs plus the continuing operation and unbelievable maintenance. All our baby as taxpayers!

Did your taxes just go up?  Mine did because St Pete needs money, the county needs money, the EMS needs more money and they keep coming to us the property owners to get it.

Well, now another 1% sales tax is on the menu!  This is a boondoogle. Can you say Boon Doogle?  Let PSTA face bankruptcy or cut expenses now.

Under this major progressive "CEO" Brad Miller, he has gone on a spending spree, hired more consultants and pr firms,

Say No! By attending this meeting and helping us to voice opposition to this high risk project being brought to Pinellas by the Progressive Rail

 Advocates:

Ken Welch, Karen Seel, Jeff Danner, Susan Latvala, Jack Latvala, TampaBay Times   (Click here for contact info)

Perhaps you have seen the recent articles in the Times about citizen surveys now supporting using taxpayer money to fund light rail! And the talk that bus ridership is up, up, up! Get ready, they are warming up the propaganda machine and this ask for the referendum by the PSTA to the now majority liberal county commission is the next step.

From there they will spend our tax dollars telling us on TV and print what a great idea this is and how much the people of pinellas support it.

Folks, we are in the same battle here in Pinellas County as we are in in D.C. They will bankrupt every one of us by expanding government projects, redistributing our resources , creating more union jobs and creating new bureaucracies.

You don't have to go to DC to see the problems, get in your car and come to PSTA building on 34th St and Sherer Drive off of Ulmerton. You can't miss it, it looks like the Taj Mahal.

Yes, this is negative cash flow at it's best and looking to us to bail them out.

Come to this meeting prepared to fight back at this early stage. And be prepared to sign up at the door for your 3 minutes to speak, if you wish. We need to speak up on record.

We will have No Tax For Tracks Signs for you.

Help kill the groundwork for Pinellas light rail and the 1% sales tax hike steaming down the track!

HB865  was Sponsored by Representative Ed Hooper and Sen. Jack Latvala Sen. Jack Latvala of Pinellas County!

Statement by Rep. Hooper on Oct. 11, 2011 (video)

The Pinellas Bus System (PSTA) is Bankrupt.

Operating on reserves, last September PSTA raised our transit tax by 30%.

Still, PSTA is running out of money and near the legal tax cap.

They bought about 3 years with the tax increase

Solution?

On January 30th, PSTA voted to go forward with constructing a

$2.0 Billion 24-mile Light Rail system in Pinellas County.

Only the government would attempt to save a failing system by massive expansion!

And For starters, they need an additional 1% county sales tax!

This is where HB865 comes in, to convince us to pass the 1% hike they will "swap" out real estate transit tax

  ·      HB 865 says if we will vote to impose an additional 1% sales tax on ourselves, PSTA will stop

collecting the small 0.730% transit tax on our real estate bill!

                     ·       HB 865 will make it easier to convince voters to pass a 1% sales tax increase!

                     ·       HB 865 will enable rail advocates to falsely sell this tax increase as Tax Swap!

                     ·       HB 865 will enable the false messaging of a tax reduction on real estate tax

Pinellas sales tax would be 8%!

This is no swap, it is a bait and switch!

This is a calculated move to impose a $100 Million tax increase!

FACT: Current Pinellas transit Ad Valorem tax revenue is $32 Million.

A 1% transit sales tax would generate $130 million!

This is not revenue neutral, this is a tax increase!

It is the amount needed for light Rail and the PSTA bus bailout in Pinellas.

When faced with the same situation last year, Hillsborough cut underutilized bus routes, raised fares, laid off staff, cut the budget!

It is disingenuous to call this a tax swap when it sets into motion a 1% sales surtax and removes $100 million out of our local economy!

Tell those state committee members:

"What you are voting on is light rail for Pinellas."

Ask them not to assist the rail advocates in Pinellas County by voting yes on a deceptive tax increase bill!

Tell them PSTA needs to cut their budget, not generate a new treasury to expand government jobs, pensions with a train!

This is all about qualifying for federal rail seed money that will prove to be an economic drag in perpetuity because like Hotel California,

Once you check-in, you can never check-out!

Key Points:

Stress.....This is not revenue Neutral! There is no parity!

If passed, this will allow a 1% tax increase referendum in 2013 to be disguised and sold to the public as a Tax Swap !

Look who is riding Portland light rail!  Looks like Pinellas empty Buses!

Yeah, we need a train to feed and care for!

An example of a letter, you may cut and paste and mail to the above County Commissioners, or write your own!  Be sure to mention you are Pinellas county resident!  Call to if you can!

Dear (Board Member),

As a member of the Pinellas County Board of commissioners, you will be hearing Rail Advocates want a 1% sales tax to fund light rail and as seed money to obtain Federal Grants.

Since Neighboring Hillsborough County voters said no to a 1% transit sales tax increase referendum in 2010 attempts to disguise the true intent by laying the groundwork of calling the 1% voter referendum a tax swap.

This is no swap. This is a calculated move to impose a $100+ Million tax increase!

This bill is being spearheaded by Sen Jack Latvala with the help of Rep Ed Hooper.

It is disingenuous to call this a lowering of property taxes when it sets into motion a 1% sales surtax.

This is all about qualifying for federal rail seed money that will prove to be an economic drag in perpetuity because like Hotel California, once you check-in, you can never check-out.  (I am including an additional synopsis below letter - possibly include flyer information synopsis)

Please resist any attempts to implement a tax swap, or increase of the sales tax, on behalf of Pinellas County residents to avoid being tricked into raising taxes for a money loosing rail project we cannot afford.

Thank You,

Your name

Pinellas County resident

HB 865 is sponsored by Ed Hooper and reads as follows:

Provides for alternative income revenues through specified discretionary sales surtax under certain conditions; prohibits authority from levying & collecting ad valorem tax revenue after it elects to accept discretionary sales surtax proceeds.--

We must fight!

See what one Minnesota legislator after the fact has to say about extending their rail lines speaking from experience:

We need to stop this from rooting in our community now!
